Writer's Workshop

Writer's Workshop is a yearlong writing curriculum that is divided into monthlong units of study.  These units of study enable students to learn how to write in a particular genre (ex: small moments or how-to books) and learn writing conventions such as revision and peer editing. The students will produce several pieces of writing during each unit of study and at the end of each unit choose one or two pieces to revise and edit for publication. Please check our What's New page to see our unit of study for each month.

Listed below is the structure of each Writer's Workshop lesson:

  • MiniLesson - teacher implements 10 minutes of direct and explicit instruction.

  • Time to Confer - children are instructed to write on their own using skills from minilesson while teacher conducts small group/individual conferences with writers.

  • After-The-Workshop Share - Selected students will share pieces of writing while the class/teacher share & point out important writing details/skills.

  • By inviting children to write each day it is our goal to produce life-long writers!

Encourage your child to write at home by:

  • Keeping a "feelings" journal or a diary to write about day-to-day happenings.

  • Having your child assist you in writing your grocery shopping list.

  • Assist your child in writing a weekly "to-do" list or chore list.
